The modern girl is your average American girl, who has her Ipod, laptop, blow drier, flat iron, curling iron, cell phone… you get the picture. To put it simply she is “plugged-into society.” To this extent I would consider myself a “modern girl.” Unfortunately technology was not one of my favorite things this week.

On Sunday I was getting ready for church, I had already blowdried my hair and had my flat iron plugged in and warming up. When I began to straighten my hair I realized that my straightener was not hot… it wasn’t even warm. In other words, my straightener had died, deceased, kicked the bucked, was no more, passed on, perished, croaked, bereft of life, bought the farm, departed, expired, gone to meet its maker, lifeless, was pushing up daisies, dead. To my horror I only had 15 more minutes before I had to leave for church. By the grace of God I was able to tame my hair into a manageable style. Later that afternoon I purchased a replacement for my recently departed straightener… may it rest in peace.

On Tuesday I had a chapel presentation due. Seeing that people are visual learners I made a PowerPoint display that coincided with the presentation. I have enough technology savvy to know that I should expect the worst, consequently I provided myself with a large space of time to get my presentation up an running. The projector was setup for me in the chapel and all I needed to do was plug in my computer and “have at it”. So what did I do? I plugged in my computer and attempted to get my presentation to show up on the screen. Long story short… it wasn’t working. I returned to the office to ask if anyone knew how to do it… nope. I texted my brothers… “pressed a bunch of keys until it works” or “i don’t know how to help you” were my responses. So I went and found some high schoolers from ACA, we were diagnosing the problem when my computer decided to freak-out. First the mouse froze, then the screen went black. I turned of my computer and restarted it. The computer decided that it didn’t want to work and wouldn’t even make it to the password screen! By this point I told the guys not to worry about it and I would just make my presentation without the PowerPoint.

Later that day….

I had just entered the dorm when I thought I heard my phone ringing. When I grabbed my phone I realized that it was not ringing but rather had someone talking to me. Apparently my phone decided to act of its own accord and call my manager on her cell phone.

Still later that day….

By this time I realized that technology was not on my side and that I should expect the worse when I went to work that evening, and technology did not disappoint me. Soon after I arrived I was informed that certain individuals had ruined some of the night crews privileges. During the evening while we are on our breaks we are often in the office on the computer playing spider solitaire. Occasionally when it is ABSOLUTLY DEAD we will play it while we are on the clock, but this circumstance does not happen frequently. Apparently an individual who usually works nights decided to play on the computer during lunch time and now all of the night crew gets punished for someones lack of thought.

Today is Thursday and so far I have not had any more technology drama, but you never know. Stay tuned to find out more.

I am at James and Renae’s and Renae has ordered me to update my blog so here I go.

Nothing entirely major has happened lately, just a bunch of random things so here is a random post.

Customers are interesting.

There is this one elderly gentleman that comes in early in the morning to get a bowl of soup. He will only eat chicken noodle or minestrone. When he comes in and we are serving Chipotle Chicken Corn Chowder or Broccoli Cheese he begins to lecture us about how nobody likes those soups and that he needs lots vegetables to keep himself alive. He doesn’t understand first of all, people love those soups more than chicken noodle and second, that we have to rotate through our soups. What makes him even more interesting – and somewhat scary is that this man needs a walker to get around. Okay, so that walker doesn’t sound scary…. but the man drives a car!! Seriously… if the guy has to us a walker should he really be driving?

I was very studious the other day while I was avoiding my homework. I know this sounds like an oxymoron…. but its true. I took a ton of classes for subway university. I have now finished 22 classes… I’m not sure how many more I have to do before I graduate.

I have taken Hannah to the ER allot recently. I think I’m getting used to this idea of staying up all night, well, that is until i get to class the next morning. I did fine in class on Thursday, but I was pinching myself all through chapel in order to stay awake. Thankfully I have never fallen asleep during class or chapel during my college career… yet.

I have a dilemma for next Friday night. PBC is going bowling then to coldstones. LBC is going to boomers. Bowling and ice cream is “free” cause I paid the activity fee… boomers’ isn’t free. Either way I will be making some of my friends mad… maybe i should ditch both that way I don’t have to decide

Hmmm, I’m not sure what other random information I should post. If I think of anymore I will post it later.

Grrr. I made great plans for today. It was my day off and I was going to seclude myself at the coffee bean, which has free Wi-Fi, and I was going to spend time on the internet. Checking email, blogging, Subway University, etc., well I made it to coffee bean just fine, ordered my drink and got ready to use my computer. Wouldn’t you know it… my computer decides it does not like the internet today. Oh, it says I’m connected… but nothing is loading. On top of that, I had brought my headphones so that no one would have to listen to all my subway stuff… and my computer won’t admit that I have even plugged them it. Sometimes computers make me want to go crazy.

I rebooted my computer… that didn’t help. Texted my brother… he can’t help until I visit tomorrow. My only solution is to give up, go home, and finish the book I was reading.

Well, seems how I am writing I might as well give a good update about my life. As usual, work keeps be busy. Oh the drama of work! Half the time I can’t help laughing at all of it. Most recently, I heard a rumor that I was trying to get someone fired! I’ll try to tell this story as simple as possible. One morning I was working with two other shift leaders. One of them is usually a closer (like me) and we were commenting how another closing shift lead has become “comfortable” with work. Well somehow, word traveled and the shift leader who we said was “comfortable” heard that me and the other person thought she was “lazy” which then was interpreted, as we want to get her fired! Honestly, I should know better than to say anything like that at work. It doesn’t matter who you work with, whatever you say will be spread through the entire store by the next day. Nothing is ever held in confidence. I guess that comes with working with a bunch of girls.

Life in the dorm is going normal. Hannah and I see each other every occasionally. Between our work schedules, different churches, and her doctor appointments, we see one another for maybe two 15-minute sessions a day (that’s just Monday through Thursday). From Friday to Sunday, it is actually a miracle if we see each other. I think we have become fairly good at summing up our days in those few minutes.

I went to Six Flags Magic Mountain last week with my Sunday School Class. It was a blast. I honestly couldn’t tell you what was the best ride… terminator… batman… tatsu… I don’t know they were all pretty fun. Although I definitely didn’t like the line for superman… dark tunnel… crowded… hour wait… I couldn’t wait for fresh air! My only regret was that we didn’t get to go on X2… both times we got in line we were informed that the ride was down.

I can’t wait for August. I get to go on vacation! I will by flying home then driving with my parents and brother up to Oregon to attend my cousins wedding. I will be gone for two weeks! When I return I will be registering for my classes and back in school. I feel as if summer is flying by!

I’m not sure what else I should say. Oh! I cut my hair! It is now above my shoulders. I haven’t had it this short in over 5 years. It is taking a little while to get used to, especially when I have to try to put it up for work.

Today is my little brother’s and Grandpa’s birthdays. Daniel is 19! Man that makes me feel old… even if I’m only 20 I made sure I texted him bright and early this morning to wish him a great bday. Well, in actuality, it was still dark outside, and I hadn’t gone to bed yet. I’m sure he appreciated a text just after midnight though.

Ok. I need to stop rambling. Hope you enjoyed reading about everything.

Yes, it is true. I take classes from Subway University. Well… that is if it would work right. I am currently at James and Renae’s apartment attempting to take a class that the owner wants all of the shift leaders to take. The problem is that it isn’t working. grrr…. Consequently I have decided it would be a great opportunity to update my blog.

I sincerely apologize for not posting in a LONG while. Since my last post a many things have taken place. I work 40 hours a week …or at least one or two hours shy of it. I also got a raise!!! Subway definitely keeps my busy. When I’m not at work I get called in… or they ask me to run an errand for them… basically I live and breath subway.

I’ve done tons of reading so far. I’ve already lost count of how many books I’ve read.

My grandma passed away about three weeks ago. She had lung cancer, but died in her sleep from a heart attack. (the hospice nurse said she probably didn’t feel any pain). I went home that weekend. Grandma didn’t want to have any services… just a family gathering at the house. There were approximately 85 people there (almost all of them are related to me… if only i knew who they were ) One nice thing about the trip was that I had the chance to see my adorable niece!!!!!!! She can say “auntie”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thinks thats about it. I should probably get back to subway university.

I wrote a post several months ago about a book I read called “The Shack.” Let me give a quick recap.

I wrote a post several months ago about a book I read called “The Shack.” Let me give a quick recap.

The story is about a man who learns to forgive his daughter’s murder, forgive his father, and renew his relationship with God. The novel contains many doctrinal errors, and I caution anyone who read the book to be firmly grounded in their doctrine before reading the book.

So, I was at work today and I was opening with a girl who says she is a Christian. She attends a liberal church somewhat faithfully, but she does not live a separated Christ-like life. She asked me if I had ever read “The Shack” and I told her yes. When she asked me what I thought I told her that it was doctrinally inaccurate and really wasn’t worth reading.

She then informed me that the author of the book came and spoke at her church. She said that what he said sounded somewhat weird… as if he didn’t believe in God, and then the next statement he did. She said she sat in church wondering why the pastor had invited him to speak. I suppose he was very persuasive, because in the end she wants to by the book… even though she doesn’t agree with everything he said.

I pray she doesn’t read it; she already has things in her life she needs to deal with. “The Shack” would only make things worse.

I had an interesting day yesterday. I remembered why I hate closing three days in a row… while being a full-time student. I made a customer mad… he called me a liar. Oh he made me mad! I wanted to talk back to him! Instead I opted to go to the back and cool off. I have come to two conclusions about customer.

1. Regular customer are kind of creepy

2. Customers are fickle

Where should I begin this story? Well, first, I am Obsessive Compulsive when it comes to my wake-up alarm. I check it at least five times before I go to bed. Is is set for the right hour? AM or PM? is the volume high enough? etc.,

I worked this morning from 6-2 which means my alarm was set to go off at 5am. So, this morning I am lying in bed “hmmm, I wonder what time it is.” “I checked my alarm last night and it hasn’t gone off yet.” “Let met just make sure.” So I get up and walk across the room to my dresser to pick up my phone. … “where is my phone?” “Oh NO!” “PHONE!!!!” So, I ran frantically to the kitchen to find a clock “6:22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” “NO!!!!!!!” “WHERE IS MY PHONE!!!” … It was in my bed, under the covers!!!!!! “I’m supposed to be at work, and I have the key to get in! somebody is waiting out in the cold! Oh no!” I text my manager “just woke up. running to work” No lie! I ran out of the dorm.

So, I make to to work, and guess what. My opener isn’t there!!! She thought she worked later in the day and didn’t open. So finally, we both are at work and have 20 minutes to get the store ready to open! Praise God we made it!

But my story isn’t finished!

The GM was supposed to come in today at 8am. She lives kind of far away and needs to take the 210E to get to Pomona. If you have heard any traffic reports this morning you heard about the major accident on the 210E that caused two fatalities, well she had to sit in that traffic. Two hours after she was supposed to be at Subway she finally made it!

So I don’t know how in the world it was possible, but all three of us were late! We all had our own issuse, but it made for a very intersting morning.

Let me start by saying that work called me on Monday and wanted to know if I could come in and close… I said “No way, Jose! I need to to homework!” And I did actually do homework

Last night during my break I was texting Daniel and asking him what he was doing. He told me he was working on a devotional for his speech class based off of Psalm 68:19 and 72:18. He also informed the that he had read the verses the day before Bert’s caregiver unexpectantly died. I didn’t have my Bible with me so I told him I would look them up when I got home that evening.

I got home around 10:30ish and noticed that Hannah wasn’t home. I knew she was feeling sick and that she has a doctors appointment in the afternoon, but she should have been home by now. My conclusion what that she was in the hospital and I was a little mad that I wasn’t told that she went to the ER (but then again when your sick you don’t really think that logically). I got in contact with her and she told me that the she had been to the ER and they were sending her home with medicine… (and still no answers).

I went to my room and began to do my evening devotions and remembered that I was going to look up the verses that Daniel told me about.

Psalm 68:19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah

Ps 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.

Wow! that was just what I needed! No matter what the circumstances of life my God only does wondrous things. I may question His working but when I stop and consider I know that He is doing wondrous things. I may wake up in the morning with a headache or I may have a really bad day cause of celiac but my God still loads me with benefits. No matter how my day begins or where it goes my God has supplied an overabundance of benefits to me and is constantly doing wondrous things. God is truly amazing and worthy to be praised!

You’ve guessed it. another blog about work.

I was so excited about this weekend because they scheduled me to have three days off in a row!!! Actually I was suppose to go in on Saturday morning for an hour for a meeting, but the owner decided that he didn’t want to pay for everyone to go to this meeting, so it was cancelled. So I opted to visit my family today… and Subway called me twice. The first time the GM called me about a question regarding party platters. I was so glad when that was all she wanted because I was so sure that she was going to ask me to work tonight. Well less than an hour later i get another phone call. And you’ve guessed it. they asked me to come into work… Sunday morning. Apparently the manager is in the hospital and can’t open tomorrow morning so I was asked to work from 6-8 am. Well, you know me… I can’t say no to work. So tomorrow morning at 6am I will be at Subway. At 8 I will be in my car headed back to the dorm and by 10 I will be at church. As for my last day off, Monday, I plan to do lots and lots of homework. :)

I know that you are probably tired of hearing about all the work drama in my life, but my story isn’t finished.

Let’s start on Wednesday - I begin to lose my voice.

Thursday I have the day off and spend the entire day trying not to talk… by the way it was very hard… I always have something to say to someone.

On Friday my voice is better, but wasn’t 100% so I called work a little before 9am to see if I could get out of work. Well, the manager was sick; one shift leader came in at 9; and the other one was suspended. So there I was working… without a voice. Thankfully I didn’t have to help that many customers.

Saturday morning I went to the OC to visit James and Renae. That evening (3pm) I got to work and there were two girls working. Soon after I was there one of them asked if she could go home (she was very sick). I told her to find someone to cover her shift seems how she was supposed to be there until 8. Well, no one could cover for her. The other girl left at 4 and couldn’t stay longer. My closer wasn’t getting in until 5 so I told the one girl to make it until 5 and then I would send her home. 5 o’clock came and I sent her home… leaving 2 people for the entire dinner rush. Thank God that it was a slow night. We not only got all of our work done, but all of her work too.

You would think that this would be enough of a story for one week… but its not… it never is.

Sunday: My voice was doing better… but still not perfect. I was scared of what choir would do to it so I chose not to sing in the morning service but when to evening practice anyways. Thankfully I am an alto so I had no problems with hitting those low notes… but my voice didn’t like the top half of the treble clef. Near the end of choir my phone vibrates and it says “Subway Pomona.” So I get up and answer the phone. Long story short – they needed me. I told them it would take me approximately 30 minutes to get there because I had to go to the dorm and get changed and then head back to Subway. On my way out of the Church parking lot I called the manager and told her that I was going in but that it would probably put me on overtime and that I wouldn’t get there for another 30 minutes cause I had to go change. She told me not to worry about changing and just go in as I was. *Let me remind you that I am in my church clothes… heals and all.* So I went straight to Subway. The time now is roughly 4:45 and there is a party order (3 large platters) due at 5 and only 1 platter was done, the front was a mess, there where a ton of customers, we were nearly out of bread, the shift lead is new to the position, one co-worker is new and the other one is just learning the cash register. Needless to say it was pretty crazy. I found an apron and got to work on the party platters. Just after 5 they were finished and given to the customer. Next to tackle were the mess and the bread. I’m sure that the customers thought that I was either someone important or a little crazy… I wasn’t in the uniform and I was in a skirt and heals! I was so glad that I grabbed a hair tie when I left the dorm that afternoon. By 6:15 everything was under control and in a manageable state so I left. I had completely missed church by now, but was able to go to the Harvey’s for the college activity.

Well, that was my life this week. I hope to one day write and say that nothing eventful happened at work… like that will ever happen. Also I do plan on blogging about school… we will see when I get to that.
