The Post You Have Been Waiting For

Posted by rufeo on Aug 19, 2010 in Asides

For those of you who stalk me thru my blog I have decided to give you an update. :)

After graduating from PBC in late April, I didn’t know what coarse my life would be taking over the course of the summer.  I sent out a few resumes but didn’t get any responses.  Daniel and I took a vacation to Washington and saw a bunch of our family.  In June I had the opportunity to teach summer school for middle school.  After summer school finished, I still didn’t know what I would be doing in the fall.  I revamped my resume and sent it out again.  This time I received multiple responses.  Some schools said they already filled the position; others wanted me to fill out an application.  One school seemed very positive in their response and I even had a face-to-face interview with them.  Well, God had different plans for me.  As of today I accepted a part-time job at SFC.  I will be in charge of their after school program.  Typically this has been a time of mass chaos, but I will be transforming it into a tutoring style atmosphere.  Although this wasn’t necessarily my dream job, I am looking forward to what I can do with the program.

The Countdown

Posted by rufeo on Apr 20, 2010 in Life

Three more days of teaching.  I can’t believe where the time has gone.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a teacher and can’t wait until I have a class of my own.  On Thursday, my “last” day we are going to  have a party in the class!

Friday is Elementary GSACS so I will be doing stuff at that.

I head down to So Cal sometime during the weekend and graduate on Wednesday!!!

I’m so excited for graduating.  Unfortunately, I have no clue what I will be doing after I graduate.  I don’t know where I will be teaching or what in the world is going on.  Please pray for me as I make all of these decisions.

High-Heeled Traitor

Posted by rufeo on Mar 28, 2010 in Life

I realize that it has been a while since I have posted and I will do my best to give you an update about what has happened recently.

Student teaching has kept me incredibly busy.  I am now officially in charge of the following subjects:

  • Handwriting 3 and 4
  • Spelling 4
  • English 4
  • Math 4
  • Science 3 and 4
  • Reading 3 and 4
  • History 3 and 4

For those of you who didn’t count, that is 11 subjects!  Last week SFC had our Stanford Achievement Tests.  I was completely in charge of 3rd grades tests which was kind of fun.  Instead of boring you with  useless info on my life I will tell you a story.

I always, always, always were flats to work.  If you think about it, it makes sense to wear flats because I am constantly walking around the room.  Wearing heels is just impractical.  Well on Tuesday I decided to break with tradition and wear heels.  Oh, and not just any heels!  I wore my brown heels (the nice tall ones).  I really didn’t think any of my students would notice… boy was I wrong!

At 8am I entered the gym to pick up my classes and the girls immediately noticed my change of footwear.  The boys were completely clueless as to what the girls were oo-ing and aw-ing. For the sake of those poor boys I pointed out my shoes… they weren’t too impressed (go figure).

Like I stated before, I was in charge of 3rd grades SATs.  We happened to be taking the tests in separate classroom from 4th grade.  In between two of the tests I took the 3rd grade outside for snack/free-time.  The class was enjoying running around, when one of the 4th graders walked past on his way to the restroom.  Well, apparently he wasn’t too thrilled that 3rd grade got to be outside while he was stuck inside during his free time.  He decided to get his revenge on my by calling me a “high-heeled traitor.”  :)

Another Boring Post

Posted by rufeo on Feb 11, 2010 in Asides

So there still isn’t too much going on in my life. I am continuing to do my student teaching at SFC.  Over the past four weeks I have observed, graded papers, taught Spelling & Handwriting, and subbed in the Staff Day Care (the nursery) for two days.

During my two day stint in the nursery I discovered that I chose the right major.  The children in the nursery were not horrible, but they did lack the skills necessary for intellectual conversation.  I was very excited when I was able to return to my third and fourth graders.

As I stated I have taught spelling and handwriting.  Next week I will begin teaching third grade reading.  I am looking forward to teaching; however I am not looking forward to my first two stories.  It is just my luck that the first two stories I have to read are about snakes.  If anyone knows me, they are aware that I have a phobia of snakes.  Needless to say I am not looking forward to those first few lessons.

Tomorrow there will be no school because the teachers are having a staff development day.  SFC is working on getting out WASC accreditation.  Our development day will be focusing on things that we need to work on for WASC.

Today third and fourth grade are celebrating Valentines Day.  We will be walking to McDonalds for our party.  :)

Student Teaching

Posted by rufeo on Jan 21, 2010 in Life

This week commenced my student teaching at SFCS.  Currently I am observing the third and fourth grade class which is taught by Mrs. Becky Wilson.

There was no school on Monday because of MLK Jr Day therefore my first day of work was Tuesday.  My first order of business was attending the teacher’s meeting then I had a meeting with Mr. Asire (my boss).  I was then introduced to my class and began observing.  I really didn’t do anything my first day other than sit in the back of the class and watch.

SFCS uses traditional curriculum as opposed to an ACE-style.  The because of the number of students they have combined third and fourth grade.  For half of the day the third grade class is in another room with another teacher, during the other half Mrs. Wilson is having to balance two classes in one room.  As of two weeks the class of 24 was meeting in another smaller room, but after gaining 2 students and a student teacher the administration decided to move the class into another room.

This was the setting that I entered on Tuesday morning.  The classroom still had not been put together, their teacher wasn’t feeling well, not to mention we had stormy weather outside.  All things considered Tuesday was a good day.  Wednesday was very similar. Thursday, today, I have spent most of the day doing odd jobs: decorating the class, copying papers, etc.

Overall, it is nice to be home but I am still adjusting to this new stage in my life.
